Reps. Caldier and Kagi holding foster care town hall Saturday, June 10

Washington State Representatives Michelle Caldier, R-Port Orchard, and Ruth Kagi, D-Seattle, will be holding a town hall meeting Saturday, June 10, in Gig Harbor to discuss the future of foster care in Washington state. The forum will be open to all Puget Sound residents, who are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas.

“If our state’s going to fix its broken foster care system, we need to come together and develop comprehensive solutions that will make a lasting difference for children and families,” said Caldier, a former foster child and foster parent. “This is not a partisan issue. We need involvement and input from citizens all across the political spectrum. I’m looking forward to holding this town hall with Representative Kagi and continuing to work with her and many others in the Legislature to create a better foster care system and bring hope to those who need it most.”

In two separate op-eds published earlier this year in The News Tribune and Kitsap Sun, Caldier discussed the urgent need to reform the state’s foster care system. Among the reforms she supports is Kagi’s House Bill 1661, which would move Children’s Administration out of the Department of Social and Health Services and merge it with the Department of Early Learning.

“We know that children do better if they grow up in a safe and stable environment, but that is not the reality for too many children and young people who are living in a foster care system in crisis,” said Kagi, chair of the House Early Learning and Human Services Committee. “When there are young people sleeping in hotels or social worker offices and nearly half of all children in out of home care move at least twice a year, it is time to come together to address this crisis. I look forward to working with Representative Caldier on reinventing foster care so that all children have the opportunity to succeed.”
