KING 5 Investigators: Caldier says state’s foster care program isn’t getting the most out of its taxpayer money

Rep. Michelle Caldier, R-Port Orchard, says foster care costs ranging from $17,639 to $31,582 per month per child highlight a dysfunctional system that relies too much on a network of group homes to care for foster children with severe behavioral or medical problems.

Caldier introduced House Bill 1347 to cut the red tape that stops many foster parents from accepting challenging foster kids. She was blindsided when the Washington Association for Children and Families, which represents group homes, testified in opposition of the bill.
